Europe's solar boom is turning midday power negative, and storage is the answer

Record European solar output is pushing midday power prices below zero. Why the value has shifted from generating electricity to storing it, and what it means for your home.

Something strange is happening to European electricity. In the second quarter of 2026, the continent generated a record amount of solar power, roughly 20 percent more than in any previous spring. That is good news for the climate and, in theory, for household bills. In practice, it is doing something less expected. On sunny days, when panels across Europe pour power into the grid at the same moment, the price of electricity is collapsing, sometimes all the way through zero and into negative territory.

When power costs less than nothing

Negative prices are no longer a curiosity. In the first half of 2026, Spain recorded 596 hours of negative wholesale prices, Portugal 462 and France 370. The pressure grew so intense that European power exchanges lowered their price floor from minus 500 to minus 600 euros per megawatt hour, simply to keep the market functioning. The logic is blunt but simple. When everyone produces at once and no one needs the extra energy, that energy becomes a liability rather than an asset. A solar panel running flat out at noon can be generating electricity that the grid, at that exact hour, does not want.

And yet the same day tells a very different story after sunset. In June, afternoon prices in Germany repeatedly spiked above 600 euros per megawatt hour, while France and Spain climbed past 100. The value of electricity has not disappeared. It has moved. It now lives in the evening, and in the ability to shift power from the moment of surplus to the moment of need.

Storage is where the value went

This is why batteries have become the centre of gravity in Europe's energy transition. Large grid-scale storage operators are already reorganising around it, pulling capacity out of the day-ahead market and reserving it for the intraday and balancing markets, where the swings, and the margins, are largest. The same principle scales down to a single home. A household battery stores electricity when it is cheap or free and releases it when it is expensive. Paired with a dynamic tariff, it turns a solar household from a passive exporter into an active player that profits from volatility instead of being punished by it.

The subsidy era is ending everywhere

Behind the market signals sits a policy shift that points in exactly the same direction. Across Europe, the arrangements that once rewarded households simply for feeding power back are being dismantled. The Netherlands ends its net-metering scheme on 1 January 2027. Germany cuts its feed-in tariff every six months and now pays new systems nothing during negative-price hours. France let its export payment collapse this year to just over one cent per kilowatt hour, against around 19 cents to buy power back. In Flanders, the spinning-backwards meter and the battery grant are already gone. From country to country the message is consistent. The grid will no longer pay you for electricity delivered at the wrong time.

What it means for your roof

For anyone with panels, or thinking about them, the takeaway is not that solar has stopped making sense. It has not. What has changed is where the return comes from. The money is no longer in selling your surplus, it is in using it yourself, and in storing what you cannot use for the hours that actually pay. Panels, a storage-ready inverter, a battery and the right tariff are becoming a single system rather than separate purchases, and the payoff depends on how well they fit together and match the way you actually use energy.
